Every once in a while, you must have seen people appealing for pains all over their body. It may be difficult to understand if a person appeals for pain yet the appearance is fine, but there is a high possibility that they suffer 'fibromyalgia'.
The prevalence of fibromyalgia is around 1 - 4% of the total population, which is very high. It mainly occurs in women, but in stressful occupations, it tends to occur regardless of gender. The age of onset is mostly 30s to 50s, but in some cases, it occurs in high school students under stress.
Thankfully, fibromyalgia is not the early stages of arthritis, lupus or multiple sclerosis and is not life-threatening. Nevertheless, it is an intractable disease that degrades the quality of life to such an extent to prevent daily life or work life.
Although the cause of fibromyalgia is still unknown, the academia presumes that it is caused by brain's paraesthesia for feeling pain. In other words, the brain has become sensitive to pains. But the diagnosis of fibromyalgia isn't easy. The patient must appeal musculoskeletal pains in the whole body for over 3 months and feel significant tenderness at 11 or more of 18 specific body parts during diagnosis. Therefore, the muscular problem should not be overlooked than the brain's paraesthesia for pains.
Some patients have fewer tender points (areas where they feel pressure pains) and appeal greater pains in specific areas. These patients are more likely to be suffering from myofascial pain syndrome, which is similar to fibromyalgia. Patients with fibromyalgia can show normal without abnormality in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), ultrasound, musculoskeletal examination, and neurological examination.
Treatments for fibromyalgia patients include drug therapy, exercise therapy, cognitive behavioral psychotherapy, induced point injection therapy, massage, chiropractic and electric needle therapy. There are numerous treatments for fibromyalgia due to the difficulty to cure disease.
Recently, stem cells are widely used to treat fibromyalgia in the US and Switzerland. Stem cell injections reduce pains and cause changes in the autonomic nervous system such as sweating hands and feet and increased body temperature. In some cases, patients with depression may recover self-confidence. This is because stem cells react on the mental health of patients as well as muscular pains to alleviate symptoms
